We have selected this variety for around 30 years and the fruits of King are one of the earlier ones to turn red with plants able to bare 4-9 red peppers at a time while they are ripening to red . Two ways to use: #1: plant them in the autumn or spring in a hoophouse for early scallions. In our Nebraska climate, fall planted shallots do form a hard stem that sends up a seed stalk . Scallions from spring planted shallot bulbs are ready to harvest in early spring so they bridge the need for onions well when stored onions are at their end. Spring shallots are also much quicker to harvest than sowing scallions from seed. #2: Harvesting the dried down bulbs in the autumn, using them through the winter.
